Bapu Atma Singh and Mata Gurmej Kaur

On 16 March 1993, the Punjab Police martyred Mata Gurmej Kaur Manochahal, the mother of Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal, while she was being held in illegal custody at the Vairoval Police Station. After killing Mata Gurmej Kaur Ji, the police cremated her body at the Durgiana Mandir crematorium in Amritsar.

She had been arrested on 15 September 1992 from Katra Sher Singh, Amritsar, and since that day, her family received no information about her whereabouts. The last confirmed sighting of her alive was at Vairoval Police Station in mid-March 1993. Later, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra discovered her name listed among the unidentified cremations at Durgiana Mandir, Amritsar, which had been conducted by the Punjab Police.

Similarly, Bapu Atma Singh, the father of Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal, was approximately 67 to 70 years old when he was apprehended by officers from the Sarhali Police Station on 25 August 1991, at his residence. The operation was led by DSP Gurmeet Singh Randhawa and SSP (Tarn Taran) Ajit Singh Sandhu. He was last seen in police custody on 24 October 1992, after which his family never received any information about his fate.

Although his son, Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal, was a prominent Kharku leader, Bapu Atma Singh himself had no involvement in any militant activities. Despite this, he had been detained 25 times before his disappearance.

This photograph, taken in 1982, helps provide a sense of their appearance and age around the time of their martyrdom.
